NORQUEST COLLEGE FACULTY ASSOCIATION

Frequently asked questions

Here are a sample of the more common questions the Association gets asked. You are also encouraged to attend our workships that address the Collective Agreement. Workshops are posted on the College's LRN.
  1. Do I have to fill out a vacation request for Christmas holidays or the Spring Break?

    ?

No. These breaks are provided to faculty as directed in the Faculty Collective Agreement, and since they do not use any annual leave, vacation forms are not required. If a faculty member takes additional annual leave attached to either of these college provided breaks, then a vacation form is required for the annual leave taken.
  2. What's the difference between a sick day and a personal day?

    ?

Sick days, aka Casual Illness, is where a permanent or term faculty member takes up to 3 consecutive days off due to illness or requiring time off to attend a dental, physiotherapy, optical, medical or other such appointments. Prior authorization by the College is required to attend appointments during work hours. If the faculty member works 1 hour in a half day he or she is absent for the appointment or illness, then the absence will not be charged against their Casual Illness entitlement. Faculty are eligible for up to 10 casual illness days per calendar year.
  3. When should the Interim (Spring) Break be taken?

    ?

Most faculty members take their Interim Break either in the February Reading Week (the week that starts with Family Day) or during the semester break the last week of April. If you are taking the February Reading Week, due to the Family Day holiday, you are required to take your 5th Interim Break day as either the Friday preceding the Family Day week or the Monday after the Family Day week. If you wish to take your Interim Break outside of these two timelines, you must arrange this with your immediate supervisor who will ensure that operationally your request is possible.
  4. Do I have to state a reason for my personal day?

    ?

Yes, you should disclose to your immediate supervisor the reason for your absence so that they can ensure the proper form of leave is being used (ie: should it be personal/emergency leave, sick leave or annual vacation). However, on the Absence Form, you can just put “Personal/Emergency Leave” as the reason .
  5. How do I file a complaint against a supervisor?

    ?

That depends. If your supervisor is management (i.e. not a faculty member, like a Program Chair) then you can contact the NCFA Faculty Welfare VP to see if the actions of the manager contravene the wording or intention of the Collective Agreement. This should be done right away because you only have 21 days since the time of the incident to file a grievance (a formal complaint). If your supervisor is a Program Chair, you can either email your complaint to the Division’s Associate Dean or Dean articulating your concern, or contact the NCFA Faculty Welfare VP to contact them on your behalf.
  6. What is ACIFA?

    ?

The Alberta Colleges & Institutes Faculties Association or ACIFA is a free association of the faculty associations at Alberta public colleges and institutes. It has been created to provide support in contract negotiation and dispute resolution, provide awards for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning & Innovation in Teaching, advocate for Post-Secondary Education, build community both internally and externally, co-host an annual conference, professional development, and information exchange. The NCFA pays ACIFA a membership fee that is based on the number of term and permanent faculty employed. For more information, please visit www.acifa.ca
